If you want to straighten your teeth without visible metal brackets and the discomfort that comes with them, you may want to consider Invisalign. Invisalign is a clear, thermoplastic tooth aligner which gradually shifts teeth into place. Like traditional braces, it is highly customizable for your dental needs.
How it works
Before treatment, any patient must be assessed to see if they are a good candidate for Invisalign. During this assessment, a digital scan is performed to get a 3D image of the teeth, which will be used to map out a customized treatment plan and create the Invisalign trays.
Invisalign must be worn at least 20 to 22 hours a day for approximately 6 to 12 months. The length of treatment varies, depending on your dentist’s advice. The Invisalign aligner trays will be replaced with new ones every two weeks. They are engineered in a way that allow for certain teeth to move with the correct amount of force until they shift to their ideal position. Typically, teeth will move up to 0.25 mm per tray. Once your treatment is complete and your teeth are evenly spaced, your gums will adhere to the teeth in their new positions.
Benefits of wearing Invisalign
Invisalign does more than invisibly straighten the teeth. They are also valuable in correcting bite issues such as overbite, gapped teeth and overcrowded teeth. Invisalign helps to decrease the potential for these issues, which can cause oral health problems, including gum disease.
Unlike metal braces, Invisalign makes it easy to enjoy the foods you love. The aligner trays are removable for brushing, flossing, eating and drinking. Invisalign is also ideal for people who play rigorous, high-contact sports. Since they are made of thermoplastic, cuts from wires or brackets do not occur.
Is Invisalign right for you?
The use of Invisalign depends on each patient’s dental needs. While both traditional braces and Invisalign are designed to straighten teeth, each has pros and cons. Invisalign is typically most useful for aesthetic purposes and simple dental corrections, while braces work better to fix more complex problems. Metal braces also adjust misaligned teeth in a relatively shorter period than Invisalign. Only a consultation with an experienced Invisalign provider can determine which type of treatment works best for a patient.
