2. Fish and tuna – Because of their protein content, fish, tuna, and other meat sources are broken down by the body. It is then turned into fuel during a process called “ketosis.” This process results in the production of “ketones” and these alternative body fuels can cause odours. Sometimes brushing and flossing alone will not hide this scent.
3. Spices (like garlic and onions) – Consumed in small portions, garlic and onions can enhance the flavour of food without leaving behind a strong smell. However, both saturated are with sulfur, which can be absorbed into the bloodstream and expelled through the lungs and mouth.
a. Alcohol – Overconsumption of alcohol can lead to unpleasant breath as it affects the body’s metabolism. After being converted into acetic acid, ten percent of alcohol that was drunk is excreted by the stomach. Alcohol’s diuretic properties also cause “dry mouth,” making it a breeding ground for bacteria to thrive.
4. Sugary food and drink – Cut back on sugar intake if you are serious about achieving fresher breath. Bacteria multiply when you indulge in sugary food and beverages (e.g. candies, gum, cakes, soft drinks, etc.). Sugar is also often a root cause of plaque buildup. Unless it is sugarless, even mint-flavoured chewing gum that promises to freshen breath can be the source of sugar that feeds bad bacteria.
